The Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI), a consortium of Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) member companies, has recently chartered the Nanoelectronics Research Corporation (NERC) to develop and administer a university based program to address research challenges beyond CMOS. The goal is the demonstration of novel computing devices with critical dimensions below 10 nanometers and to exercise them in simple computer circuits with the objective of enabling the industry to extend Moore's Law far beyond the limits of CMOS. NERC is made up of the following semiconductor companies:

- Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
- Freescale Semiconductor, Inc.
- IBM Corporation
- Intel Corporation
- MICRON Technology, Inc.
- Texas Instruments, Inc.

Intel is a key member of WIN, contributing both research funds, equipment and human resources. Intel Corporation engages in the manufacture of semiconductor chips, as well as in the development of advanced integrated digital technology platforms for the computing and communications industries. Dr George Bourianoff is Intel's program manager for WIN.

WIN is also funded partly by the UC Industry-University Cooperative Research Program via its major program awards. The program promotes early stage research and aims at attracting the best and brightest in academic research and commercial R&D communities in pursuit of research needed for a broad spectrum of technology application opportunities and needs.
